Remember watching kids open presents and then becoming totally enamored, not by the gift, but by the wrapping paper and the box?

I don’t think we ever really outgrow that stage. However, boxes come in all shapes and sizes, and while some are fun, others aren’t. I thought Boxing Day would be a great time to talk about some of the boxes we get ourselves into, some of them far too deep to ever get out of without a helping hand.

Boxes. Hmm, what are some examples? Hairstyles? Clothing choices? You know it’s got to come back into fashion at some point. I mean, hip-huggers did! (Mullets never were in style…come on, be serious here.)

There’s the ~ouch, sorry to bring it up~ spent too much box. That one seems awfully big and scary at this time of year. I’m looking around at the things that arrived as presents this year. While I’m grateful we’re past the ‘breakable toy’ stage in my house, now our gifts seem to cost more. Sigh.

I’m not going to even mention the ‘ate too much’ box, but what about the ‘going to lose the weight’ one? Anyone going on a diet on Monday? Not me. That’s one box I’ve decided to crawl out of with a little help.

We bought a Wii Fit for the family and I’ve been doing a little bit each day and having a blast. You should see my chicken imitation… I’ve got a pedometer, and I’m working toward that magical 10,000 steps ‘they’ say we need each day.

My girlfriend and I have been hitting the streets in the morning. Hubby and I walk in the evening. I’ve got new snowshoes, so even when there is a lot of snow, I have no excuses. I’m feeling so much better, and the box seems to be losing its hold on me.

One other box I hear people talk about is reading habits. I know I go through streaks of loving to read everything I can in one genre, or by one author. While it’s been fun, I’ve been challenged to ‘get out of my box’ and try a new story every now and then, and so often it’s been just what I needed to perk me up. Lauren Dane’s Undercover- a futuristic ménage, is a wonderful contrast to her shifter books like Wolf Unbound and her romantic contemporaries like Chased. Mari Carr’s Because of You is a romantic suspense.

Ciar Cullen’s Love’s Alchemy, I think one of my favorite reads of 2009, has a little bit of everything in it! I read a lot of paranormal, so these books help wake me up and made me happy. And the box I had unknowingly crawled into disappeared.

What are some of the boxes you’ve gotten into over the past year? Can you think of a few new ways to get out? Cut a hole in the side, or tip it over. There’s a whole big world out there and we can’t fully appreciate it when the flaps are closing in on us.
